A permeating feature of all of the works and hangings at fielding is this - that they do not permit a survey from one standpoint alone. The process of the gaze must necessarily be accompanied by a path through the space.

In his contribution to the exhibition, Hans Holten turns this into the very constitutive principle. The space of the work is both inside and outside the exhibition building, but the character of its appearance profoundly depends upon whether you are standing on the footbridge looking up towards the internally illuminated glass portal, or standing inside the building, where the construction is visible and the light only indirect.

It is almost as if there were a case of two independent works, so vast is the division here between the inside and the outside views. The sense that you as a viewer, can obtain, irrespective of angle of incidence, of being referred to the posterior side of the work, imparts the piece with a strange kind of enclosedness that approaches the enigmatic. The tension between the spatially extroverted and the inaccessible has been seen before in Hans Holten's works, but here, at Portalen, it seems all the more paradoxial, because all the elements are actually laid forth openly and visibly in the space.
